1: Online Easy Guide and checklist download

2: By mail, if eligible (read below for instructions)

Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the MVA in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local MVA.

3: Via a local MVA office

If your prefer to access MVA services in person or your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at a physical MVA office location. Varying MVA offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the MVA closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your local MVA allows you to make a personal appointment. Read more below to see if an in person visit is either preferred or required.

New Maryland car registration

If you have purchased your vehicle through a dealership then they will perform all necessary registration tasks, but if you have just bought or been gifted a car any other way, or become an official resident, you are expected to register your vehicle as soon as possible. Renewing your Maryland Vehicle Registration

Renewing your tag is an easy process in Maryland, as you are given option of renewing in person, online, by phone, at a self-service kiosk or via mail.

Maryland allows some drivers to renew their registration online, provided that they meet the certain state requirements. Make sure to have at hand your Maryland driver’s license number, date of birth, title number, and a credit card or banking information to pay the required fees listed renewal notice.

To renew your Maryland tag in-person visit http://www.mva.maryland.gov/Hours-Locations/ for a list of MVD offices in the state of Maryland. You will also be required to present your registration renewal notice, proof of emission inspections (if applicable), payment for required fees, proof of insurance and your current registration certificate.

You are only eligible to renew by mail if you are out of state or can’t make it into an office. To renew by mail, fill in any missing information on the renewal notice and send it in along with payment for the required fees to the address listed. Be sure to take care of any emissions testing, if applicable.

If you do not feel like waiting in line, MVA offices all have self-service kiosks, which will immediately release your new registration certificate to you.

Finally, if you wish to register by phone, make sure your information is correct on your renewal notice and does not need any changes. Once you’re ready, dial 1-888-834-7344 and follow the instructions given. Your new registration should arrive within ten days.

Replacing Your Maryland Car Registration

Losing your registration can be a pain, but if you live in Maryland it is easily fixable. You can apply for a duplicate registration (for a fee of $5) either in person at any MVA office or online. 

To replace your Maryland car registration online, make sure you have at hand your license plate number, vehicle title number and a credit card for the duplicate fee.
