2: By mail
Some drivers prefer to handle the renewal process by mail, rather than taking advantage of assistance services, visiting the MVA in person, or via available online services. Service by mail is available with limitations. Read below for additional details or visit your local MVA.
3: Via a MVA office
If your specific needs require an in-person visit, most, if not all, driver license services can be handled at your local MVA office. Varying MVA offices sometimes supply different types of services so you will need to check before your visit to make sure the MVA closest to you provides the service you require. In addition, you can call to see if your MVA allows you to make a personal appointment.
Regardless of why you do not own a driver's license, you will still need to apply for an ID card for various reasons, ranging from leisure activities to travel. Getting an ID card in Maryland is simple, and you should begin the ID card application process as soon as you are ready.
Obtaining a new ID card
To apply for an ID, first, you should plan a visit to your local driver's license office.
Cost
In Maryland, an identification card costs $15 if you are under the age of 18, or $24 if you are over 18. If you are 65 or older, there is no fee for a Maryland state ID card. Cash, check (made payable to: Motor Vehicle Administration), or credit card (Visa, MasterCard or American Express are acceptable forms of payment.
Documents
When you visit a local MVA office, you will need to bring as many of the following documents with you as are available:
- Social Security card
- Proof of residence
- U.S. passport
- Birth certificate
- Military ID
- Proof of age

What is a Maryland state ID?

ID card renewal
If you are 18 or older, your ID will expire every eight years, if you are under 18 years old, your ID will expire every five years. You can renew your ID online, or at an MVA self-service kiosk located in all MVA offices. You will receive a renewal notice in the mail prior to your ID expiring, letting you know whether you are eligible for the online service.

Replacement ID cards
If you have lost your ID card, or it has been stolen or severely damaged, you should look into replacing it immediately. A stolen ID card may even lead to identity theft, so it is crucial you replace your identification card as soon as possible. A replacement ID card in Maryland costs $20 (there is no fee if you are over the age of 65).
